KU Competition: Kanile`a `Ukulele Online `Ukulele Contest

Open to all ages 18 and under. Must be no older than 18 years of age through December 31, 2018.

All participants 18 and under are welcome to submit videos in the following four categories:

FOR STATE OF HAWAI`I RESIDENTS ONLY

      • SOLO – Solo artist on `ukulele instrumental
      • SOLO VOICE – Solo artist playing `ukulele and singing
      • GROUP – Group performance of two or more; `ukulele must be primary lead instrument(s); may be instrumental only or with singing

FOR U.S. CONTINENTAL & INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTS ONLY

      • INTERNATIONAL – `ukulele performance of any kind

 How to enter:

    1. Each separate video submission must meet requirements of one category only
    2. Participants may work together in groups or submit entries as individuals.
    3. The length of the video may not exceed 60 seconds (one minute) which includes the 10 second on screen introduction (see #5).
    4. All entries should begin with an on-screen introduction not to exceed 10 seconds. This introduction, clearly spoken, must include the following information:
      • Performer’s name (first and last) or Group name
      • Age(s)
      • City
      • Category
      • Title of performance piece (please note if it is a cover or an original)
    5. Video entries are to be submitted via email at KUcompetition@kanileaukulele.com.
    6. Videos submitted in the GROUP category must have one Lead Performer to serve as the main point of contact via email. Recognition and prizes will be given to the Lead Performer to distribute to group members.
    7. There is no entry fee.
    8. Preliminary entries may be submitted through e-mail starting on January 15, 2018. The deadline for preliminary submissions is 11:59 pm HST (Hawai`i time) on February 18, 2018. Semi-finalists will be announced no later than February 28, 2018.
    9. Semi-finalists may choose to submit a second video for consideration through e-mail starting March 1, 2018. The deadline for semi-finalist submissions is 11:59 pm Hawaii time on March 30, 2018. Finalists will be announced no later than April 9, 2018.
    10. IF CHOSEN AS A FINALIST you must submit a signed/completed Parent Permission Form and a signed/completed Performer Release Form for each person appearing in your video. Forms can be scanned/emailed to: KUcompetition@kanileaukulele.com; faxed to 808-234-2871; or mailed to: KU Competition Kanile`a `Ukulele, 46-216 Kahuhipa Street #3, Kaneohe, HI 96744.
    11. Finalists may choose to submit a final video for consideration up to but not exceeding four minutes through e-mail starting April 10, 2018. The deadline for finalist submissions is 11:59 pm Hawaii time on April 23, 2018. One winner in each category will be announced no later than May 1, 2018.
    12. Finalists are welcome to shoot a final video submission in our Kanile`a `Ukulele studios located at 46-216 Kahuhipa Street #3, Kaneohe, HI 96744.
    13. All entries must be submitted in digital format.
    14. Adults may assist with production as cameramen but not content contributors on or off camera.
    15. Content must comply with all local and national laws of the United States. Content must NOT 1) promote illegal behavior; 2) support racial, religious, sexual or other invidious prejudice; 3) advocate sexual or violent exploitation; 4) violate rights established by law or agreement; 5) invade the privacy of any person; or 6) be otherwise inappropriate as determined by Kanile`a `Ukulele in its sole and conclusive determination.
    16. The judges’ decision is final. Entries will be judged by performance, with winners in each of the four categories: Solo, Solo Voice, Group and International. Decisions will be made based on the Kanile`a `Ukulele Judging Criteria.
    17. The only compensation for submitting a video is the opportunity to be awarded a prize if the entry wins. Kanile`a `Ukulele will pay filmmakers and performers no additional compensation nor be liable to the filmmaker and/or performers under any circumstances.
    18. All entries must be submitted in English. Songs with vocals may be sung in languages other than English as long as they comply with item #16 (see above.)

      • Musical collaboration with Hawai`i/International `ukulele stars Honoka & Azita with the option to perform onstage with them at the Kanile`a Celebration in September 2018. All transportation and accommodations to be paid for by the winner.
      • Two tickets to the Kanile`a Celebration in September.

  • Second Place:
      • $350 KU card to use towards the purchase of a Kanile`a `ukulele

SOLO VOICE – Solo artist playing `ukulele and singing

  • First Place:

      • Musical collaboration with an awaard-winning Kanile`a artist with the option to perform onstage with them at the Kanile`a Celebration in September 2018. All transportation and accommodations to be paid for by the winner.
      • Two tickets to the Kanile`a Celebration in September.

  • Second Place:
      • $350 KU card to use towards the purchase of a Kanile`a `ukulele

GROUP – Group performance; `ukulele must be lead primary instrument(s)

  • First Place:
      • Kanile`a K-1 instrument
      • Musical collaboration with the award winning group Kapena with the option to perform onstage with them at the Kanile`a Celebration in September 2018. All transportation and accommodations to be paid for by the winner.
      • Two tickets to the Kanile`a Celebration in September.
      • Kanile`a accessories gift bag
  • Second Place:
      • $350 KU card to use towards the purchase of a Kanile`a `ukulele
      • Kanile`a accessories gift bag
  • Third Place:
      • $200 KU card to use towards the purchase of a Kanile`a `ukulele

INTERNATIONAL – `ukulele performance from entrant outside of the State of Hawai`i

  • First Place:
      • Kanile`a K-1 instrument
      • Video musical collaboration with `ukulele virtuoso and online sensation Aldrine Guerrero of  Ukulele Underground. All transportation and accommodations to be paid for by the winner.
      • Two tickets to the Kanile`a Celebration in September.

  • Second Place:
      • $350 KU card to use towards the purchase of a Kanile`a `ukulele
      • Kanile`a accessories gift bag
  • Third Place:

    1. Students should keep at least one copy of their video. Kanile`a `Ukulele is not responsible for any video projects that are lost, damaged, or that do not upload properly.
    2. All finalist and winning video submissions and recordings become the property of Kanile`a `Ukulele. Ownership of all other video submissions and records remain with the entrant, with the following exceptions:
    • Entrants grant Kanile`a `Ukulele the right to use their names, photographs, statements, quotes, testimonials, and video submissions for advertising, publicity, and promotional purposes without notification or any compensation.
    • Entrants also grant Kanile`a `Ukulele the right to use, reproduce, reprint, distribute, perform, and/or display the entrant’s project video without further compensation or notification to the entrant.
    • Kanile`a `Ukulele maintains the right to reproduce, reprint, distribute, perform, display, or exhibit the project for advertising, publicity, and promotional purposes on their website, at conferences, or at any other venues.
    • By accepting the prizes, winners agree to hold Kanile`a `Ukulele and all Kanile`a `Ukulele company owners, employees, agents, artists and affiliates harmless against any and all claims and liability arising out of use of such prizes and collaborations. Winner assumes all liability for any injury or damage caused from participation in the contest or use/redemption of any prize.
    • Entrants agree to be bound by the official contest rules and decisions of the judges.
